The Estuarine Habitats and Coastal Fisheries Center is a 69,250 square foot marine biology laboratory designed to facilitate the programs of the National Marine Fisheries Service. It is a neighbor of and complementary to the National Wetlands Research Center. These two buildings mark the center of the University Commons on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
The facility wraps around a deep water pond that approached the shore in wetland areas. Offices look out onto the water on two sides with the Lobby and Interpretative Center giving access to the pond area on the third side.
The steel frame structure is sheathed in the same red brick that is in the research park standard finish, but adds a silver wall that slices through the length of the main building and wraps it in a reflective skin that contrast the brick and calls attention to the technological nature of the building.
