Old Beauregard Middle School, affectionately nicknamed “Old Beau” by local residents, was originally a courthouse built in 1914 which became a school in the 1970’s. Designed in the Beaux Arts tradition, the symmetrical, all white facade conveys a sense of order and majesty. Heavily damaged in Hurricane Katrina, Old Beau has been fully restored to its original stateliness, and now houses a library.
The restoration included replacing the roof, repairing and refinishing all windows and doors, repairing and restoring exterior and interior plaster finishes, and restoring the original copper cornice. A two story addition at the rear of the building pays homage to the original architecture while remaining true to contemporary materials and construction techniques. Old Beau encloses 14,800 square feet on three floors and was restored for $7.2 million.
