The Weather Forecast Office in Key West was designed for the National Weather Service, with the understanding that it could be occupied during a Category 5 hurricane. Elevated seven feet above the ground, the structure is above the anticipated storm surge level. Large glazed areas are equipped with pneumatic storm shutters which are engineered to withstand extreme wind pressures and wind blown debris generated by 165 mph winds.
Located in the center of Key West, the balloon launch facility is elevated to 45 feet above grade to allow for weather balloons to be launched above treetops and power lines.
The building is operational on a 24/7 basis and has complete emergency generator backup to assure operations during severe weather events. The interior contains a concrete box designed to serve as a Severe Weather Occupancy Shelter to protect employees against winds up to 250 mph.
